The walk to Cirque de Gavarnie

Summer in Chalet du Bastan and Barèges

Barèges sits on the GR10, the famous walking route which runs across the Pyrénées from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. There are many beautiful walks which start in the village, catering for all levels of fitness.

Barèges has a huge affinity with cycling because the Tour de France cycle race passes through the village on the way to the Col du Tourmalet. During the summer, a constant stream of hopefuls set off on the gruelling ride to the top. The challenge is to cycle from the Terrace Bar in the centre of Luz St Sauveur, through Barèges village and on to the Col du Tourmalet.

Recently, the village agreed to open some of the ski lifts so that visitors can take their bikes up into the mountains and enjoy the mountain tracks which weave through the trees. The restaurants are open during the summer months and are a pleasant walk from the village

The Pic du Midi in La Mongie offers spectacular views of the Pyrénées, and is reached by cable car, or if you are feeling energetic, you can walk there from the Col du Tourmalet.

There are countless other activities on offer, from trips down the caves at Bettharam, to the aerial adventure parks strung high up in the trees, to bungee jumping off the bridge in Luz and horse trekking to the Cirque de Gavarnie
